When I started yoga, like many people, thought it was just about being flexible and the pursuit of poses. I immediately realized that yoga was much more, but I still didn’t yet know what "the much more" really was. So I practiced sporadically for many years, always loving how I felt after yoga, but for some unknown reason, never committing to the practice on a more intense or regular level. After incurring a fairly serious back injury, I was inspired to find ways to learn and explore ways to incorporate mind, energy, and positive thinking into the healing process. This led me back to yoga with a completely new awareness. Physically, while of course yoga helps with flexibility and strengthens our bodies, in my classes I emphasize more the aspects of yoga that bring us balance, connectedness, patience and awareness to our bodies and mind to allow for amazing energy to flow through both.

I have been practicing yoga on and off for as long as I remember, starting with imitating my mother as a small child while she practiced every morning.
I kept my practice intermittently through many moves and changes in my life and I came to realize that yoga was the only physical activity I was practicing that gave me that something extra, that feeling of joy and peace and wholeness. This led me to complete my teacher training in the Vinyasa Flow style with the inspiring Anna Laurita at Davannayoga. I can't wait to share my love of yoga and the transformation it can bring.

Yoga to me is love. My goal is to reflect that as much as possible through my classes and my own practice. My long love for exploring how the body moves and the shapes it makes led me to completing a degree in kinesiology at UBC. I try to bring this physical awareness into my classes through a strong and sweaty asana practice, focusing on alignment. After years of competing in high performance sports and studying the body from such a physical perspective, I found yoga as a refuge to “just be,” and start experiencing the other beautiful qualities of mind, body, spirit and emotion that the body also holds. After numerous injuries sustained as a firefighter paramedic an early retirement seemed a wise choice. Left without much physical enjoyment, Debbie turned to yoga. What a blessing!
